As high school student in 1982, I was fortunate enough to be enrolled in a Vocational School to learn Early Childhood Education. My teacher mentor was revolutionary in founding a new curriculum for students to learn by running an actual classroom day care center. The high school students were responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operations. The learning lab curriculum offered sophomores students hands on lesson preparation etc. to third year seniors serving as Directors. It was through this program that I started my love for education. It was Jill Burnham who structured this academic course where future teachers could learn in a classroom lab setting. The day care center was staffed by high school students and 4-year-old preschoolers who attend several days a week. I attended Parkview Vocational School for 3 years and later moved on to attend The University of Georgia where I earned my first degree in education.
Thank you, Ms. Burnham for helping me become a teacher. What I learned from Ms. Burnham was based on the teachings of Jean Piaget whose work emphasized that children actively construct knowledge through interacting with their environment.
